Quillbot

Students and writers who need to rework existing text rather than generate it from scratch.

QuillBot started as a paraphraser and has grown into a full writing suite. The distinction that still matters is that it is built for reworking text you already have rather than generating it from nothing, which is a different job from most tools in this category.

The sidebar is the clearest statement of what the product is now: Paraphraser, Grammar Checker, AI Detector, Plagiarism Checker, AI Humanizer, AI Chat, AI Image Generator, Translate, Summarizer and Citation Generator. That is a lot of separate tools that would otherwise be separate subscriptions.

The academic case is the strongest one

Plagiarism checking, citation generation and summarising in the same place as the paraphraser makes this an unusually complete fit for coursework and research writing. Most competitors cover one or two of those and expect you to buy the rest elsewhere.

The AI detector and humaniser sit awkwardly next to each other by design, one flags text as machine-written, the other rewrites it so it does not. Be clear-eyed that AI detection is not a solved problem for anyone, including QuillBot. Treat a detector verdict as a weak signal, never as evidence.

Design Studio is the newer direction

Alongside the writing tools there is now a template-driven design side covering documents, presentations, resumes and sized social posts. It is a genuine expansion rather than a token feature, though it moves the product further from what most people originally came to QuillBot for.

What it costs

Free covers the core tools with monthly caps, stated as 25,000 words and 300 images a month. Premium is $4.17 a month billed annually. For a suite covering this much ground that is low, and it is the main reason QuillBot competes well against buying a paraphraser, a grammar checker and a plagiarism tool separately.

Note that no monthly-billed price sits next to that figure on the premium page, so work out the annual commitment before comparing it against a month-to-month competitor.

Where to be careful

There is no public API, so QuillBot stays a tool you use rather than one you build on.

And if your work involves academic integrity rules, check what your institution permits before running coursework through a paraphraser or humaniser. The tool being available says nothing about whether using it is allowed where you are.

  • Academic writing with citation and plagiarism checking
  • Checking whether text reads as AI-generated
  • Translating and summarising source material

Our assessment

Pros

  • One subscription covers paraphrasing, grammar, plagiarism, AI detection, translation and citations rather than several separate tools
  • $4.17 a month billed annually is low for a suite this broad
  • The free plan includes the core tools rather than gating them behind a trial
  • Works across desktop, mobile, browser extension and web

Cons

  • $4.17 is the annually-billed rate; the monthly price is not shown alongside it on the premium page
  • No public API, so this is a tool for people writing directly rather than something to integrate
  • AI detection is inherently unreliable, and no vendor in this category can claim otherwise, so treat its verdicts as a signal rather than proof
  • The product has broadened well beyond paraphrasing into design and image generation, which may be more than a writer needs
