ChatGPT is OpenAI’s general assistant, and it is the tool most people mean when they say they used an AI. It handles writing, research, coding help and conversation in one interface rather than requiring a different specialised tool for each.

What each tier actually changes

Four tiers exist: Free, Go, Plus and Pro. The difference between them is not new capability so much as how much of the existing capability you get. Free carries limited access to the current model along with limited messages, uploads, image generation and memory. Go raises those limits and adds more image creation, though the plan page notes it may include ads. Plus is where the meaningful jump happens: an advanced reasoning model, expanded usage across the board, and features such as custom GPTs, projects and scheduled tasks that do not exist on the tiers below it. Pro multiplies the usage limits again and adds the strongest available reasoning model.

Practically, that means most people deciding between tiers are really deciding how often they hit a limit, not which features they want. If you use ChatGPT for a handful of tasks a week, Free may simply never constrain you. If it is part of daily work, the limits on Free and Go become the actual reason to pay.

Beyond the chat window

OpenAI also runs a separate API, priced and billed independently of the consumer subscription. Anyone planning to build on top of ChatGPT rather than using the chat interface directly is looking at a different pricing model entirely, based on usage rather than a flat monthly fee.

Where to be careful

Model names and capabilities on the paid tiers change more often than the tier structure itself, so treat specific model names as a snapshot rather than something fixed. If a particular capability is the reason you are paying, confirm it is still included in your tier before renewing rather than assuming it is unchanged.
