Pollinations

Developers prototyping AI features who want a single endpoint across modalities without a card up front.

Pollinations is infrastructure rather than an app. One API covers text, image, audio and video, the endpoints are OpenAI-compatible, and the platform handles which models sit behind them. For a developer, that is the entire proposition.

The company states 10,000 weekly active developers, 1.5 million daily requests and over 500 live apps. Those are vendor figures, but the ecosystem page does show real third-party applications rather than an empty directory.

The economics are the unusual part

Most generation APIs bill you, the developer, for everything your users do. Pollinations inverts that. Users sign in and spend from their own wallet, with spending caps and revocable access. You are not absorbing the cost of someone else’s usage.

On top of that, enabling earnings on your App Key gives you a share when users spend inside your app. That turns a cost line into a revenue line, which is a genuinely different structure from anything else in this category and the main reason to look at Pollinations over a conventional provider.

Getting started is funded by Pollen earned through quests rather than a free trial with a card on file. It is intended for prototyping and testing, and completing more quests unlocks more.

What you can actually call

The playground exposes the model catalogue across image, text, audio and video, and it is broad: FLUX, Seedream, Ideogram, GPT Image, Nano Banana and Qwen variants among the image models alone. Vision, search and embeddings endpoints exist alongside, as do streaming, tool calling and structured output.

There is also a CLI built for both people and agents, with JSON output, stdin context and a shipped SKILL.md you can point a coding agent at. That is a thoughtful detail for anyone wiring generation into an agent workflow rather than a web app.

Where to be careful

There is no pricing page in the usual sense, and /pricing simply returns the homepage. Costs are per-model and surfaced through the playground and model list. Budgeting for production means reading those rates rather than comparing plans, so do that before building on it.

The model catalogue also moves quickly, judging by the platform’s own changelog. That is good for access to new models and bad for stability, so pin what you depend on rather than assuming a model stays available.

This is a developer product end to end. If you are not writing code, there is nothing here for you.

What Pollinations does

  • One OpenAI-compatible API across text, image, video and audio
  • Vision, search and embeddings endpoints
  • Streaming, tool calling and structured output
  • User wallets with spending caps and revocable access
  • Revenue share for developers when users spend inside their app
  • polli CLI for humans and agents, with JSON output and a shipped SKILL.md for coding agents
  • Media inputs: upload any media and get a URL back for use in model calls
  • Open source stack, developed publicly on GitHub

Pollinations pricing

Plan Price Includes
Quest Pollen $0 Free Pollen earned by completing quests, for prototyping and testing. More quests unlock more earning.
Usage-based Variable Beyond quest credits, users sign in and spend from their own wallet, with per-model rates. Developers can enable earnings on their App Key to take a share when users spend in their app.

Who it is for

  • Prototyping AI features without committing to a paid account
  • Building an app where users pay for their own generation
  • Calling several modalities through one integration rather than several vendors
  • Wiring generation into coding agents through the CLI

Our assessment

Pros

  • Genuinely free to start through quest-earned Pollen, with no card required
  • OpenAI-compatible endpoints mean existing code often works with minimal change
  • The wallet model means your users can fund their own usage rather than you absorbing it
  • Revenue share is unusual: developers earn when users spend inside their app
  • Open source and developed in the open

Cons

  • There is no conventional pricing page, so working out what production usage costs means reading the model list and per-model rates rather than comparing plans
  • Pollen and quests are a non-standard model that takes learning before you can budget
  • Aimed squarely at developers; there is no meaningful product here for a non-technical user
  • Model availability is curated by the platform and changes frequently, judging by its own changelog
